Mission:
*
The
Tahkai
Project
is
an
organization
created
to
promote
urban
reforestation,
protection
of
wildlife
habitat, ecological education,
nature
appreciation, local beautification, sustainable resource management,
and experiential opportunities
for
Durham and our
surrounding communities. Through the propagation,
distribution and planting of
young
trees, we
strive to promote values of patience, endurance, cooperation,
attentiveness, knowledge and
vision. All
are welcomed and encouraged to participate.
Origin
:
* The Tahkai Project arose from a simple
appreciation for the beauty, function, structure and
climbability
of trees. Seedlings growing immediately adjacent to buildings and
sidewalks were saved from
impending
death and given better homes, cuttings were taken, acorns were
gathered, wide varieties of
seeds
were stratified and propagated, interests were piqued, and the
inevitable path was foreseen. After
the early days of curiosity and crude
experimentation proved to be so prolific and fulfilling, a separate
but related interest in
photosynthesis (namely Photosystem II and the P680 molecules) shed
light on our
Sun's role as the primary
energy source for life on Earth. Meanwhile, the tall trees stood
patiently and
symbolically
as a celebration of the magic and inquiry of our natural world.
